What you need to know!

Why CSN should go smoke-free?

CSN can provide a clean & healthy learning environment for the entire community!

A smoke-free, vape-free and tobacco-free campus will:

  • Protect people from unwanted and involuntary exposure to tobacco and passive smoke.
  • Establish a supportive atmosphere for those trying to quit using tobacco.
  • Create a culture of wellness for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
  • Create a cleaner and healthier living, learning and working environment.

Tobacco use

is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability & death in the United States.

Smokers are

more likely than nonsmokers to develop heart disease, lung cancer and strokes.

Smoking can affect your oral health causing tooth damage, teeth staining, or mouth/throat cancer.

E-cigarettes contain harmful substances such as nicotine, cancer causing chemicals & heavy metals like lead.

There is

NO SAFE LEVEL

of exposure to secondhand smoke!

Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body and affects a person’s overall health.

Woman quitting smoking

Reduces tobacco use among young adults & changes perspectives toward tobacco use.

Educate yourself by educating each other

Creates the opportunity to educate the campus community about tobacco-related issues.

Policy enforcement faqs

If passed, what is the proposed timeline for enforcing the policy?

The goal is that this policy will go into effect December 2024. Prior to this start date, signage will be posted throughout CSN and cessation resources will be shared with all members of the campus community.

What are active policy enforcement tactics that

can be implemented at CSN?

  • Including it in the Student/Employee Code of Conduct & General CSN Policy & Procedures
  • Distributing policy reminders (ex. signage, social media reminders, etc.)
  • Having campus events be tobacco-free

How would the tobacco free campus policy be enforced?

A 1st violation would be addressed with education about the policy & tobacco cessation. For repeat violations, it would result in a verbal warning or written documentation.

Is there a real life example of active policy enforcement tactics at a tobacco-free campus?

Yes! At UNLV, the Office of Student Conduct & Supervisors addresses a 1st violation through education about their policy & cessation. Subsequent violations are addressed through verbal warnings or written documentation.

Who can help implement this policy?

All members of the CSN Coyote Family! (Ex. ASCSN, CSN Faculty Senate, CSN Campus Police, CSN Administration & much more!)
